This month, we had our Beaches Evaluator dog, Molly, help us pick out and put together this large list of easy homemade dog recipes! These recipes are all Molly approved, and your dog will love them, too!



Everyone's Favorite: Peanut Butter

Molly says to stay safe by making sure all peanut butter used in these recipes DO NOT contain xylitol because that ingredient is toxic to dogs.

Frozen Peanut Butter Cups


Ingredients:

  • 4 bananas
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 4 plastic mini cups

Directions:

  1. Peel, slice, and freeze your bananas.
  2. Mash your frozen bananas (or use a food processesor or blender) until they have the consistency of a soft-serve ice cream. 
  3. Add your peanut butter and mix banana and peanut butter well.
  4. Put mix into 3-4 cups, freeze, and let your dog enjoy!!

Frozen Peanut Butter & Coconut Oil Paws


Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-natural peanut butter
  • 1 teaspoon unprocessed coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • silicon paw print tray (optional, you can use mini cupcake tins or any other small  container)

Directions:

  1. Place coconut oil in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until melted. If it's already melted, you can just put it into a mixing bowl.
  2. Add your peanut butter and cinnamon and mix well.
  3. Pour mixture into tray and freeze until set.
  4. Carefully remove treats rfom tray and let your dog enjoy!!
  5. Store any leftovers in a air-tight container in the freezer, as they will melt if left out.

Glazed Peanut Butter Bones


Ingredients:

Bones:

  • 1 cup pumpkin
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup oil*
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Glaze:

  • 2 tablespoons bacon grease, coconut oil, or chicken fat, melted (Molly suggests coconut oil, but says that bacon grease is yummy too in small amounts!)
  • 1/4 cup smooth peanut butter

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Combine pumpkin, peanut butter, eggs, and oil in a bowl. Add in baking soda and whole wheat flour. Stir until a stiff dough forms. Knead dough or mix just until flour is incorporated.
  3. Roll out dough with a rolling pin and use a cookie cutter to cut out dog bone shapes, or just bake into little circles like cookies. (or you can leave them in circular cookie shape). Bake for 15 minutes.
  4. Whisk the bacon grease and peanut butter until very smooth. Drizzle over the treats and cool till glaze hardens (it does best in the fridge or freezer). Let your dog enjoy!!

Peanut Butter & Flax Seeds Treats:


Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup ground flaxseed 
  • 1/2 to 1 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, oats and flaxseed. Mix in 1/2 cup beef broth and peanut butter. Mix well, adding additional beef broth if necessary to bring the mixture together to a thick dough. Form into a ball and turn out on a lightly floured surface.
  3. Roll to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut out to desired shape. 
  4. Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown, flipping halfway. 
  5. Cool completely, then let your dog enjoy!!


Meat Lovers Treats

Chicken Dog Treats


Ingredients:

  • Silicone heart mold (optional)
  • 1 cup cooked, finely diced chicken
  • 1/2 cup rice, cooked & mashed
  • 3 tablespoons rice flour
  • 1 tablespoon parsley
  • 1 egg

Directions:

  1. In a blender or food processor, blend all ingredients together.
  2. Spoon into the silicone molds (or into small balls on a cookie sheet).
  3. Place in freezer until solid, then let your dog enjoy!!

Chicken & Wild Rice Treats


Ingredients:

  • 6 oz . boneless chicken breast, cooled
  • 1/2 cup cooked wild rice; cooled
  • 1/2 cup chicken stock
  • 2 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp  salt
  • 1 egg

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Combine chicken, rice and chicken stock in a mini food processor or blender and pulse until a paste forms.
  3. Add the flour, salt, egg and chicken paste into a bowl and mix well.
  4. Sprinkle a little flour on a flat surface and knead dough until it's no longer sticky; then roll it out with a rolling pin about 1/2-inch thick.
  5. Cut out shapes and place them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. 
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes until light brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before serving. Let your dog enjoy!!

Doggy Donuts


Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 2 eggs

Glaze:

  • Greek yogurt (Molly suggests to replace the Greek yogurt with the glaze from the Glazed Peanut Butter Bones recipe above, since dairy and dogs don't always get along)
  • Cooked bacon, finely chopped

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Spray a donut pan with cooking spray and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients  (except the topping ingredients) and mix well.
  3. Press the dough into the donut pan. Fill each donut cavity and press firmly to ensure everything sticks together (it won't rise, so you should make sure each space is tightly packed).
  4. Bake in your preheated oven at 375 degrees for approximately 14 mins or until cooked completely.
  5. Allow to cool, then carefully remove the donuts from the pan. Set out a small bowl of glaze and another of bacon bits. Dip each donut carefully in the glaze, then sprinkle with bacon bits. Let your dog enjoy!!


Pawsome Pumkin-Packed Snacks

Pumpkin Dog Cookies


Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1/2 cup creamy natural peanut butter 
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup oats

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter
  • 2 1/2 tsp whole wheat flour
  • 1 Tbsp water

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. With electric mixer, beat together pumpkin, peanut butter, and eggs until combined.
  3. Gradually add in whole wheat flour, and then oats.
  4. Transfer dough to well-floured countertop or surface and dust with additional flour.
  5. Knead gently/as needed until it forms a cohesive ball.
  6. Use a rolling pin to roll dough out to 1/4" thickness (if dough seems too sticky to roll, dust with more flour) and use a cookie cutter to cut into shapes (be sure to collect the scraps between the shapes and form them into a ball and re-roll out to cut into more cookies).
  7. Use a spatula to transfer cookies to baking sheet and bake on 350F for 20-24 minutes.
  8. Allow cookies to cool completely before serving or frosting.

Frosting

  1. In microwave, warm 1/2 cup peanut butter for 15 seconds (until it can be easily stirred).
  2. Add water and stir well.
  3. Add flour and stir.
  4. While the "icing" is still warm, spread over cooled cookies. Re-heat for another 10 seconds if it becomes too difficult to spread.
  5. Let your dog enjoy!!

Pumpkin & Apple Treats


Ingredients:

  • 4 - 4.5 cups oatmeal, plus additional (you can use pre-ground oatmeal to save time)
  • 1 medium apple
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Grind the oatmeal down in a food processor or blender. Transfer to mixing bowl.
  3. Core apple, being sure to remove all of the seeds. Grate apple, and add to bowl with oatmeal.
  4. Add egg and canned pumpkin to bowl and mix well to combine. The mixture will be thick and slightly sticky.
  5. On a surface dusted with oatmeal (ground or not, your choice) roll the dough out to approximately 1/2" thick. Use a doggy bone cookie cutter to cut dough into shapes, and transfer to a lined baking sheet.
  6. Bake for approximately 12-15 minutes, or until golden and crispy. Allow to cool to room temperature, then let your dog enjoy!!


Fruit and Veggie Fanatics

Watermelon Pupscicles


Ingredients:

  • A quarter of a watermelon (go for seedless or make sure to remove all seeds)
  • One can of coconut milk

Directions:

  1. Scoop out about 1/4 of the watermelon, and remove seeds if it has any.
  2. Blend together with the can of coconut milk – add more watermelon if you want a darker pink.
  3. Pour into ice cube tray and freeze.
  4. Let your dog enjoy!!

Apple & Carrot Treats


Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup carrots, shredded
  • 1/2 cup red apple, shredded
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth

Directions:

  1.  Preheat your oven to 400°F.
  2.  Combine flour, carrots, apple, and chicken broth in a large mixing bowl.
  3.  Fold ingredients together.
  4. Sprinkle countertop with about 1 tbsp. flour and roll mixture flat (about 1/2”) using a rolling pin.
  5. Using your favorite cookie cutter, cut biscuits until the mixture is used entirely.
  6. Bake 8-10 minutes, or until lightly browned.
  7. Cool, then let your dog enjoy!

Spinach, Carrot, & Zucchini Treats


Ingredients:

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour, or more, as needed
  • 1 carrot, peeled and shredded
  • 1 zucchini, shredded
  • 1 cup baby spinach, chopped

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat; set aside.
  2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs on medium-high until well combined, about 1-2 minutes.
  3. Gradually add old fashioned oats and 2 1/2 cups flour at low speed, beating just until incorporated. Add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky. Add carrot, zucchini and spinach, beating just until incorporated.
  4. Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Place into oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.
  6. Let cool completely, then let your dog enjoy!!

Doggy Sweet Potato Fries


Ingredients:

  • 1 Sweet Potato
  • 1 tbsp Coconut Oil (melted)
  • Spices - Turmeric, Cinnamon

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Wash and peel the sweet potato.
  3. Cut the sweet potato into evenly sized long skinny (fry shaped) pieces.
  4. Coat with oil and spices - Mix in a large bowl or Ziploc bag.
  5. Place fries on baking sheet in one layer
  6. Bake for 15 minutes.
  7. Flip over fries for even baking.
  8. Bake for another 10-15 minutes.
  9. Let cool before giving to your dog to enjoy!!
